Steel Wool Emergency Fire Starter....

Okay, peeps! Scope out this here killer bit of survival know-how - starting a fire, instantly, using steel wool as tinder! Watch this video closely....



Not bad, eh? So grab a 9v cell, toss it into a small zip-lock plastic baggy, then take some fine grade steel wool and pop all of that into a larger zip-lock baggy, and stow it into a special pouch, box or tin for your emergency fire starting gear - quite a far cry from rubbin' two sticks together, eh?

Using a Compass to Find Your Way....

Well, it's about time I put up something here on navigating with a compass, eh? Alrighty then, here y'are! Watch this video....



This vibrantly peppy old chap seems to be happily on his merry way with his map and compass - let's hope he gets where he's going without getting lost haha! Actually, this very simply put video has tossed in a bunch of potentially complicated details into one tiny simple lesson. Finding your bearing, using a map, adjusting for magnetic declination, and so on. I'll post some more on this subject fairly soon here.

The Recovery Position....

Here's a bit of First-Aid knowhow that's important to know if you find a fellow camp mate (or anyone in any situation) who is unconscious....



This prevents vomiting (should it happen) from being breathed in by the fallen person, and also checks circulation. Certifiable First-Aid and CPR training can be had by contacting your local Red Cross Association.

So he's got his shelter, his bedding, and his cookin' right at arm's length - not bad, not bad at all. Notice also that it's mostly lightweight sheeting and string, which makes for good, ultralight backpacking gear.
