PEACH (White Flesh)

  • Common Name: Peach (White Flesh)
  • Scientific Name: Prunus persica
  • Specimens From: China
  • Specimens Weight: 276 gm (average wgt per fruit)
Peaches are native to China and are one of the oldest fruits around, dating back several thousands years ago. It is now a very popular fruit worldwide, due to its favorable aromatic flavour.

There are thousands of peach cultivars but most of them are usually yellow with shades of red or pink on its unmistakable velvety fuzzy skin. Those with fuzz-less skin are known as nectarines but they are actually of the same species.

Both types of the skin are edible. Its flesh is either white or yellow. White flesh is usually sweeter whereas the yellow flesh is more acidic. The photos shown above are the white fleshed peaches. There is also another type with the unusual flattened shape, the pan tao or donut peach.

There is a single brown seed encased in a woody pit or stone. The seed tastes bitter as it contains cyanide. Avoid eating it as it is harmful when taken in large doses.

Peaches can be either clingstones or freestones, meaning that the flesh sticking to the stones or not. Most of the clingstone peaches are meant for canning. Freestone peaches are better off as fresh fruits.

TINDA (Indian Round Gourd)

  • Common Name: Tinda
  • Vernacular Names: Indian round gourd, Indian baby pumpkin.
  • Scientific Name: Praecitrullus fistulosus
  • Specimens From: India
  • Specimens Weight: 90 gm (average wgt per fruit)
Tinda, commonly known by its Punjabi name, is native to India and it is popular in the surrounding countries near India in South Asia but virtually unknown elsewhere.

Tinda is firm and round with a slightly flattened shape. Size is usually smaller than a green apple. It is green ranging from pale to dark green. As in most gourds, there are numerous flattened seeds but it is edible.

So how does it tastes like? No, this fruit is not consumed raw. Tinda is always used, when in its unripe stage, as a cooking vegetable. It goes well with several Indian and Pakistani cuisines. It is also great for pickles. On its own, it tastes bland and slightly sourish but with all the spices and curries thrown in, it tastes great.

Take note that this is "tinda" and it is NOT "tindli". Both have similar sounding name from different regions or languages which add to the confusion but it is an entirely different fruit.

Tinda; Indian round gourd; Indian baby pumpkin; Praecitrullus fistulosus; Cucurbitaceae.
