Backpacking Laos

Tavel Laos --> Travel Asia Carnival will visit Laos one day. It always seem so fascinating and mysterious and yet it also seems so untouristed. Beyond Taiwan has written about backpacking in Laos. The article is a good read. Beyond Taiwan writes:

In-between Vietnam & Thailand is a skinny country called Laos and within this country lays many awesome sights waiting to be seen. Laos has a population of about 6.5 million & is a bit smaller in size than the state of Nevada. The terrain of the country is mostly mountainous & tropical which makes it perfect for backpacking. Since Laos is a land-locked country, access to the ocean doesn’t exist, but the Mekong River flows through Laos from north to south and creates about 2/3 of the border with Thailand. [More...]

Travel Asia Carnival enjoyed reading the article. It certainly seems to be a wonderful and beautiful country to visit.

Hanoi, Vietnam

Travel Vietnam --> Travel Asia Carnival has only ever been to Ho Chih Min city in Vietnam and has always wanted to go back to see more of the country but has never had the chance. Travel Asia Carnival therefore enjoyed reading Vietnam: Around Hanoi by Random ramblings. Random ramblings wrote:

The Noi Bai International Airport in Hanoi is one of the newest airports in Vietnam. It looks big but a bit dimly lit. I immediately sensed the difficulty I will have with the language barrier when the immigration officer asked for my passport but I gave him my Arrival-Departure Declaration, my Boarding Pass, my baggage claim tab, everything I am holding except the passport. So with a louder voice with matching head-scratching and dagger look, he repeated what sounded like "chupepa" and waved in front of me a passport. Silly me finally understood. [More...]

Travel Asia Carnival really has a yearning to go to Hanoi after reading the article and seeing the pictures. Maybe you will too.....

Travel South East Asia --> Travel Asia Carnival loves travelling and exploring different places. Sometimes however other travellers tips can prove very useful. Some of the best experiences on Travel Asia Carnival's trips have come as a direct result of tips from other travellers who have treaded the unbeaten path. Travel in Thailand has some Travel Tips in South East Asia. The included travel tips are for Thailand, China, Laos and Cambodia. Here is the one for Thailand:

Travelling through Thailand is a great experience public transport is great and roads are in excellent condition. A great way to see some of the countryside is to rent a motorbike. When renting a motorbike be sure to check it out thoroughly this is easy enough to say but important points like does the odometer or fuel gauge work these can come in handy later on in the trip, especially if going long distances. The motorbikes in Asia are built a little differently with two brakes a hand brake (front wheel) and the other a foot brake (back wheel). Try to use only the foot brake when travelling fast as using the hand brake will send you flying as it only applies pressure to the front wheel. Another common mistake is when going uphill shifting down gear while gassing the engine this tends to result in a front wheelie and more often than not an accident. [More...]

Travel Asia Carnival remembers riding bikes in Thailand and flying over the handle bars (really), but that is another day. The other tips are equally entertaining. Hope you enjoy...

Travel Malaysia --> Travel Asia Carnival is pleased to introduce Foodie and Travel Bug as our very first Site of the Week. Travel Asia Carnival must confess to some favoritism here since Foodie and Travel Bug is the top commentor on our blog.

Foodie and Travel Bug is a great website introducing different parts of Malaysia to her readers. She has interesting articles and fairly good pictures and provides a great perspective on Malaysia. Recent articles have included Legend Of The Moon about the moon festival and Monitor Your Surroundings, well about monitor lizards (how much more interesting can you get?) According to Foodie and Travel Bug's profile:

Shanxi, China

Travel China --> Travel Asia Carnival loved travelling through China. Unfortunately we never got to Shanxi province. A wonderful story of a journey home to Shanxi appears on the New York Times website. The NY Times writes:

AS our train from Beijing entered Shanxi Province in northern China, the land turned stark and blinding. Scarred by the chasms scratched out by brutally fitful rain, its sculpted, parched earth yielded only scrubby fields and poplars, as goats and donkeys sought lazy refuge from the relentless June sun.

My mother and I had arrived in her birthplace, our ancestral home. And as the train rolled past centuries-old Ming dynasty watchtowers, melting forlornly into the hills, I recalled the words of Zhang Jigang, the Shanxinese choreographer whom I had met in Beijing. “You’ll see how important Shanxi is to Chinese civilization,” Mr. Zhang, a director of the Olympic opening ceremony, told me. “In my opinion, you cannot know China without knowing Shanxi.” [More...]

Yes, it sounds like a beautiful place to visit. Travel Asia Carnival hopes one day to go there. Travel Asia Carnival loved the long bus rides into nowhere and seeing life lived in the country. It seems this would be more of the same.
