I recently found out the hard way that a police officer can “just run your plates”. Let me explain. I was trying to have a nice pizza/movie night with my fiance, which started out good. As you can see by the title, it wasn’t good the whole night.
We wanted to try a veggie type pizza. We had some movies saved on our DVR system that we have been waiting to watch for about one month, so this night was going to be perfect. All I had to do was get some pizza and nachos and we would be all set.
Because I live in a smaller city, the closest Pizza Hut is about 5 miles away and does NOT deliver to our area. With that thorn in my side, I called them up and decided to place an order to pick up. Ready in 20 minutes, I was getting ready to rev up the blazer and take off to pick up our pizza. With my fiance excited for pizza/movie night, I wanted to make it as fun and perfect as possible.
Quick Side Note Time
I think that is important that you know that I have high risk insurance. My poor driving record from the time I was 18 until 24ish, has rendered it impossible to not have insurance on any vehicle until 2009. Also, I must pay insurance every month and if a payment is missed, within 10 days of the due date, my license can be suspended by the DMV. At this point I have until the 17th of the month to pay.
On with the story. So, I am headed to the Pizza Hut without incident, not speeding (cause it wastes gas), with my seat belt on like usual. When I get there, the pizza is done, hot and freash, BONUS! Pay for the pizza and I am out the door. Back in the truck I am buckled up and ready to head home for a nice night with my lovely love.
As I pull out of the parking lot, I notice a police officer behind me. I think nothing of it, because I am not speeding, deviating from the lane or anything else for that matter. I am in a 4 lane divided road heading home. I legally pass a slow moving truck of some sort and get back into the left lane to make my right turn coming up. I notice the police officer fall back and breathe of sigh of relief (don’t ask me why).
As I make a right turn and continue home, I notice the officer again, weird. He follows me for about 3 blocks and then, BOOM, the lights are on! I am thinking “wtf, you bastard, you just ran my plates?”, but what does he know that I do not? Well, it turns out that my license is suspended due to none payment on my insurance. I tried to tell the police officer that I had until the 17th to pay and he said that if my paperwork stated that, the ticket would be void, but for now, here is your $109 citation.
What a bummer, I have been around and around with my insurance agent over this month to month junk and now I might have mis-read the paperwork. Whatever! Now my night is crappy and I just want to get home to enjoy my $120 pizza and a movie.
As you can see, I have to pay the fine before the 11th of December, which is sort of a problem. My hours are cut at work and my fiance (who works casually) has also had a reduction. I am going to try and gather any resources I have to get this paid. If you think that police officers cannot just “run your plates”, think again and please consider donating.
Thanks!
