Living on Adsense Blog December 2008 Updates

I am now back from Italy, which means I can bath myself in technology once again!

It’s amazing what happens when you avoid technology for two weeks. I had over 500 emails, and I am afraid to log into Google reader catch up on the blogs I read. There was one major benefit though: when I came home I had a Clickbank and Adsense cheques waiting for me. Of course I was to excited to cash my adsense cheque (it was $165) that I did not take a photograph of it as I did with first adsense cheque. This is my second adsense cheque since I started blogging in December 2007.

I have decided to reinvest this Adsense cheque towards my blog, but now that I have money to promote my blog I have no idea where it would be best utilized. If you have any ideas please do share.

This post is of course my monthly earning post so please read on to see my earnings for December:

Living on Adsense: Out of Office

When business people go out of town and are unavailable they usually leave an out of office reply for their email.  Last time I went a while without posting my readers thought I had died.

I have decided to leave a quick note to all my readers that I will be away from the blog until Jan 9th 2009, as I will be going on my honeymoon in Italy.  My new bride has asked that this be a technology free honeymoon (aside form the camera), so this means no blogging on the road!

I will be back to posting in the 3rd week of January.  Have a great Christmas holiday everyone!

Living on Adsense Blog Earning Stats for Dec 14th

If find December always flows by very quickly. So today I was surprised to realize that I had not done my weekly Adsense earnings post yet. I had taken the screenshot on Monday night and then promptly drifted of to sleep.

I’m around 4 cents higher than last week!

Here my earnings for December 8th to 14th:

Shopping at the Mall Inspires The Best Blogging Idea I Have Ever Had…

I cooked up a quick video this afternoon that covers a really great idea while I was Christmas shopping today. Personally I think its bloody brilliant idea.

Recently I have been trying to limit the number of blogs I run and really focus on a few and make them grow. And then I came up with this idea, and now I have a million more ideas for blogs, adn the best part is:

I don’t have to do too much thinking, these new blogs I am thinking about are already written. There are already 365 blog posts just ready to go! Curious? Watch the video below, and then if you like the idea and thought it was pretty cool, please feel free to Stumble, Digg or Social Bookmark this page in some way. It would be greatly appreciated!

Finally, Television Teaches Me Something About Blogging

Does anyone remember what TV was? Sure we still have television set, and yes programs are still being played on it, but is it really TV? I remember a day before Jerry Bruckheimer and Mark Burnett destroyed the boob tube.

Nowadays there is rarely a point when I can set down, relax my brain and veg out in front of the TV. I am stuck with choosing between reality TV, a crime show, or a medical drama, or some combination of the 3- Not much creativity there.

From what I can tell, there is only one good thing that has come from this new era of television, and of course I have found a way to relate it to blogging.

Yesterday I was watching an episode of Star Trek the Next generation. Yes and I am a dork, and I enjoy a good sci-fi here and there (but just to set the record straight for all you other dorks out there that are asking the question: Yes I prefer Star Wars over Star Trek). So there I was sitting there watching something from the ‘Golden Age’ of television, having a fantastic time. I tell you, if it were not for syndication I would not be watching very much TV at all. So I decided to watch an episode of Star Trek TNG, as I hadn’t watched it in quite some time. I get all hyped and start humming along with the main theme, it gets to the show and my excitement comes to a screeching halt. I find that I am watching an episode that is titled: “Shades of Grey.” SO why am I upset at this?

It’s a flashback episode.

For those of you that do not remember this aspect of the older version of TV, it is when a studio essentially cheaps out and decides to shoot a little bit of new stuff but manages to work in a bunch of clips from previous episodes. Sometimes these episodes were great, especially if you didn’t really watch the show all that much, it gave you a chance to get an idea of what other episodes were about. This was a great way to see if you would enjoy a show or not. Of course if you had seen this most episodes before, then chances are you would change the channel.

I turned off the TV and started to think about blogging.

I realized that this concept could by used for blogging as well. Why not create a flashback post that is still engaging but points your readers in a few direction to some of your classic and most popular posts. Back before I lost my blogging powers, I had written a bunch of great posts, and quite often I get sad that no one really goes through the archives and reads some of the awesome stuff that I have done. That’s where the flashback post comes in:

You can take people on a fantastic journey right to the very beginning of your blogging adventure and hopefully have them read through all of your posts and get caught up (much like how people watch TV these days, you purchase the episodes on DVD and then start at the beginning and work your way to the end). A lot of blogs you can’t read from start to finish because it is usually just a bunch of advice randomly splattered throughout the blog. The difference with the Living on Adsense Blog is that it is a story, a journey from day one of blogging.

You can point out interesting posts you made about feeling ill and then not posting for weeks and your readers assumed you were dead, or direct people to the first time you made a few cents with Adsense, and you cried.

The other great benefit of this is that it brings your RSS subscribers to your actual blog instead of just reading the post in their Feed Reader. I quite often here of bloggers getting upset because people just go to their reader and never visit the blog. Well, these flashback posts are a great way, if done correctly, to get people to come your actual blog and start reading some of your best work. I know the first time I used this method is saw that for that day the amount of time people stayed on my blog and the number of pages they visited really increase. This is a great tool, especially if you have written some great content in the past, but today you just can’t crank out a stellar post.

I am curious to see how other people have used this method. If you decide to write a flashback post please leave a comment below and a link to the post you wrote so we can all check it out!

Living on Adsense Blog Earning Stats for Dec 7th

So another week has gone by and it seems that my earnings have plateaued at an average of $13 per week. I guess if I started pushing my other blogs, I could start making some more money. My Warcraft blog is really the only one with a significant income, and also the only one with a decent ranking in the search engines. This continually pushes my theory that you really make the best Adsense CTR from search engines.

I haven’t been really pushing my other blogs too much as I have been sticking around this blog and cleaning things up, and I ‘ll prolly stick around here for a while still and just keep tidying.

Anyways here are my blog stats for Dec 1st to 7th:

I Give Up! Just Put Your Ads on My Blog for Free

living on adsense blogI have a pretty big confession to make:

Living on Adsense does not make me any income.

I have no affiliate programs that I push (besides most of you belong to the same affiliate programs as I), I have Adsense on this blog once in a while but I usually remove it from here (besides most of you won’t click the ads anyways).

I might be able to sell advertising on this blog for around $15-25 per month, but I figure why ruin a good thing and try to make money with this blog. Let’s just keep this a money making free zone.

Just remember that I drink a lot, so I could get liquored and decide to plaster this blog with ads all over the f@#king place, but for now though, this is a money making free zone.

Which right now is going to work in your favour (please note the British English spelling). You see I have decided to start giving away free advertising on my blog. Well to be precise, I will be giving away 4 free monthly ad spots on this blog.

For more details visit my Free Advertising page.

Of course at this time I have 4 blank spots on my side bar, so I am getting the ball rolling and offering the free advertising positions to the next 4 people that mention my Living on Adsense Blog in post. It doenst have to be a review, just a quick mention. So here are the quick steps to free advertisign for the rest of December:

  1. Mention Living on Adsense (with a link) in a post on your blog.
  2. Send me an email, with a link to your blog’s 125 ad (I won’t be hosting the images) and the URL of your blog.
  3. Leave a comment below stating you have completed these tasks.

I will add the first 4 people that complete all three steps to the sidebar of my blog. Good Luck everybody!

Living on Adsense Blog November Updates

Life is not entirely about Adsense, and thus my blog is not entirely about Adsense. I used to post about all kinds of weird stuff besides Adsense like: Showering less and Blogging more and Pounding Red Bull when my computer was running slowly (turns out when you drink Red Bull and blog things get much worse!). Of I started focusing mostly on Adsense because people would come to my blog and cry:

“Where is the Adsense advice”

Well, because this blog’s purpose is to share my journey as a blogger, dispense nuggets of wisdom of what I have learned along the way, I realize that just sharing my adsense earnings is wrong. There is more to this blog than just adsense, so I have decided to share my income from all of my sources as well. I figure that because I do a bit more than blogging (well I used to, and I am getting back into the swing of things) I should share exactly everything. This will also be an incentive for me to push harder, and get me business growing. I see a lot of people that have been in this game longer than I have being much more successful, mainly because they are focussed. I am not focussed.

Time to get focussed.

So, without further ranting here are my earnings for November:

adsense blog earnings

Adsense: $48.00

ClickBank: 148.89

I have also decided to share my earnings from day 1 of this blog. Although I was selling eBooks on eBay prior to starting this blog and making some good money, I have decided that the start of Living on Adsense marks the start of my real internet marketing career. At this point I am only sharing the stats from Adsense and ClickBank. I did earn some money from PayPerPost, but it was only around $200, and was way too much hassle to try and keep earning from (and Google took away my PR from using PayPerPost)

Earning since Day 1, December 10th 2007:

Adsense: $248.97

ClickBank: $4234.73

Total: $4483.7

Average Monthly Income: $373.64

As you can see I used to make a ton of more cash from ClickBank. In 2007 alone I made $5621.23. This is why I have decided to focus on my other areas of income as well as Adsense. Adsense just doesn’t bring in as much as ClickBank. So today I take an entire Saturday to plan and refocus my efforts! Remember, if you are interested in keeping up with my progress make sure you subscribe to my blog

Living on Adsense Blog Earning Stats for Nov 23rd & Nov 30th

Another 2 weeks is past and I did not update my earnings. I’m a slacker.

I did however learn that it is vitally important to keep an eye on your ads and make sure you have the best positioning. I was taking a look at my Top Warcraft Guides site and noticed that the CSS for the page with not displaying everything correctly. So I fixed it.

And then my CTR went down.

It seems that the screwed up way the CSS was displaying my site was actually getting me more clicks. When I ‘fixed’ the site to display the ads how I thought they were getting the best CTR, my earnings went way down. So I have now moved my ads so that they look more or less like they did when my CSS was messed up.

Here are my earnings for Nov 17th to 23th

A Night of Whiskey and Fine Cigars Puts Blogging Back on Track

It was a chill and crisp November evening, I was busy relaxing while filling the air with the sweet sweet scent of Cuban cigar smoke. A glass of whiskey in one hand, and cigar in the other. Nothing was going to stop my moment of peace and serenity.

Not even crack heads living below me cooking up their crystal meth could ruin my perfect moment.

I was on a mission. I wanted to enjoy the finer things in life, and at the same time find some kind of blogging inspiration. Back when I had no job, and only this good ole Adsense blog to keep me going I would find inspiration from so many places. From Scarface to the Beastie Boyz, people like Keanu Reeves and Kirk Douglas. All these things have inspired me in the past.

Now that I have a real job, I find that I don’t think about blogging as much as I should. I used to think about it all the time.  So I sit there enjoying my cigar, watching every single person that goes past me, trying to find some kind of blogging inspiration from them.

It wasn’t until I saw some crazy jogger running by that made me think:

“That poor bastard, he has to exercise while get to sit here and enjoy a scotch and stogie”

And then it hit me, my blogging inspiration: exercise.

I am just going to assume that you hate exercise as much as I do. It’s something we have to do, but is just so freakin annoying. It is a necessity. Much like our bodies, our blogs need exercise. We need to keep up posting, getting better, improving. We need to be hitting the the forums that focus on our niche topic and doing a few laps. We should head to Technorati and see what the champs in our niche are saying and then do a couple reps with them. Do a circuit and read through the blogs you have subscribed to and comment.

All these things are ways to build a stronger blog. They are all ways to exercise your blog. They are time consuming and annoying, just like exercising, but they are the only way we can stay fit. Now in keeping up this metaphor, my blog has been getting fat, I have stopped hitting the forums, reading other blogs. So now I am going to head out and do a few laps.
