Two NYC Networking Events in January

January 7, 2009 · Filed Under Entrepreneur · Comments

I hope you all had a wonderful Holiday season and you’re ready for the new year. This month is already busy for me, mostly getting ready for Vegas and Affiliate Summit starting this Saturday. I want to tell you about two great networking opportunities coming up this month that I’m attending and I’d love to see you there. The first is Mashable’s networking event at 212 Restaurant & Bar, 133 East 65th Street, NYC on January 15. It looks like they have about 90 seats left at $15. If you don’t read Mashable, you should. They get the new media and social media industries.

The other is an IAB networking event on January 28th, at VIG 27 116 E 27th St.

Will I see you there? I hope so. I’ll break the rule and tell you all about my Vegas trip (I’ll be back the day before the Mashable event). What are you guys doing this month?

Happy New Year, Affiliate Summit, Networking, Giants

January 5, 2009 · Filed Under Entrepreneur · Comments

Quick points today. Happy New Year to you and yours. I’m getting ready for Affiliate Summit West in Vegas, which is sold out. I’m leaving this Saturday. I’m in the mentor program and I have two mentees to get back to. I have a networking newsletter coming out at the end of January. And I’m worried about my Giants facing the Eagles this Sunday. They always play us tough. The game will be brutal, but I’m seeing Giants victory 24-17.

My Resolutions for 2009

December 31, 2008 · Filed Under Entrepreneur · Comments

These are mostly business related, but there are a few personal. I left out some obvious one like enjoy life more, monitor finances better, learn something new, and the like. Do you have a few to add?

————————————————————————————————————————-

Get healthier. I used to do power lifting and got away from it a few years ago. During that time away, I’ve gained weight, became diabetic, and got much too lazy. I already have a diet and exercise plan together and started it. The big time goal is to get my weight down to 185 like it used to be.

Take up a sport, besides weight lifting and cycling (part of exercise program). I’m thinking racquetball.

Learn how to skateboard. I never got into it when I was a teenager. I have a friend that did, and he’s still doing it. And he’s having fun.

Write more. I’m writing a book on Leadership, and I have a few novels in me that need to get out. I want two nonfiction business related books and one fictional novel done and published by the end of 2009.

Find a leadership position in a client facing role preferably in adserving or account management. A bonus would include the opportunity to build out a team or department. This is something I really miss since I’ve gone off on my own and it’s been eating at me. I miss the opportunity to lead a team and help them develop. Working with freelancers just isn’t the same as leading a team toward a common goal, while helping them improve their skills and guide their careers. My goal is a highly visible position in a smart, new media company that combines social media and online advertising. (I’d continue the blog here along with the changes I’m making to my business)

Change focus of my media business. I discovered the joys of email marketing with newsletters a few weeks ago and things just clicked for me. I really like it as a way to give value, entertainment, and information to people looking for what I’m publishing, while still being a nonintrusive marketer. I get to have fun, interact with a community, help people, and make a buck. The biggest newsletter and site combo I’m creating is for networking, primarily in New York City’s new media industry. I’ve tested a few things and people have asked me for more so I’m on to something good.

Build better relationships with the Affiliate Marketing networks I’m associated with. I was working with a few networks before I went to Affiliate Summit in Boston a few months ago. I passed a bunch of business cards around and got overwhelmed by the response. So much so that I couldn’t work fast enough to keep up so some of those relationships have suffered. I’m working on changing that and using affiliate marketing to better serve the community I’m building.

Move. I’d love to live in NYC and it’s my first choice. Next picks are close to Manhattan (stay on Long Island, Brooklyn, or New Jersey), and then we get crazy with other places like the Triangle in North Carolina (friends and family nearby), and other places down the list.

Meet more people. The networking I’ve been doing off line and online has been great. I’ve helped a few people get connected, find jobs, and opened opportunities. The New Year’s economy is going to get worse before it gets better, so now is the time to network. Meet people, shake hands, and build relationships. We’re all in this together.

What are your resolutions for 2009?

10 Predictions for 2009

December 30, 2008 · Filed Under Entrepreneur · Comments
  1. In the recession more people will turn to Affiliate Marketing causing an increase in PPC spend. This will make content and SEO more important.
  2. There will be more emphasis on personal brand. Those that realize personal brand means you must offer something of value to people will build a stronger brand. It takes more than just a guy on internet video talking about what they are doing. You need to stand for something and give control of your brand to a community. You stay authentic to that brand to build it.
  3. Increase in social media networking. Now is the time to network and get your name out there. It could lead to another job or business opportunity. Plus it keeps you in the loop within your industry.
  4. The company that can figure out video, social media, and a hybrid cpm/cpa system will come out on top when the economy turns for the better. Through in advertiser and publisher analytics, a community and some adserving on the side for a complete package. I have my eye on a few.
  5. There will be more social media spam, business coaches, gurus, and newbie internet marketers who have no idea how to be authentic or engage a community using Twitter. Unfortunately people will follow them searching for The Secret, a quick fix, magic pill, turnkey business opp, easy money, or the answer to life’s problems. (Here’s the secret folks, you already have everything you need just go do it)
  6. Big companies will continue to like Hulu and their “commercial like” video advertising. It’s like TV and people understand that. Look for more of that type of sponsored internet video advertising.
  7. Bloggers will continue to niche and chase the long tail. I’m a comic geek, but I’m really a Neil Gaiman Sandman comic geek. Comics may still be too general a subject for a following, but I’ll talk Sandman with you all day. That’s where the passion lives and that’s the content that needs to come out in to your blog. The niche blog is an opportunity for the solo or very small shop blogger.
  8. There will be more live video shows and people that use companies like Ustream will build personal brand and community. There will be more live streamed conferences and reality shows.
  9. No one will challenge Google. I always see analysts picking the next Google killer. It doesn’t happen. It’s like anointing the next Lawrence Taylor in the NFL draft.  There’s only one.
  10. As mobile phone use increases, with the Blackberry touch and new versions of G2 and iPhone coming out, more people will enter the cloud and desk tops will get smaller. The Dell mini is just the beginning.

Bonus – I’ll buy an Amazon Kindle by the end of the year.

So what do you see in the new year?
