I've been scouring the net for the latest netbook updates. Though I'm late, I guess I need to write about this very interesting development in the netbook segment. Dell introduced the Inspiron Mini 12, which a 12 inch version of the Mini 9 with reference to the screen size. This model exactly muddled the definition of a netbook. Netbooks are perceived to be having 7 to 10 inches of screen size. Whether Inspiron Mini 12 is really a netbook or not, I leave that to you. The basic configuration has the following specs:

- Intel Atom Processor Z520 (1.33GHz/533MHz FSB/512K Cache)
- Genuine Windows® Vista Home Basic Edition SP1
- 12.1" widescreen TrueLife Display (1280x800)
- 1GB DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHz
- 40GB PATA Hard Drive (4200 RPM)
- Intel®Graphics Media Accelerator 500
- Wireless 802.11g Mini Card
- 3-cell Lithium-Ion Battery
- Bluetooth 2.1 module
- Integrated 1.3M Pixel Webcam
- 1Yr Ltd Warranty

All these for a hefty $549.00 USD price tag based on Dell's website. Frankly you can get a full pledge laptop at a much lesser price.

Personally the model has low specs. Take for example the processor, a 1.33GHz Atom which compare to the mini 9 is under powered, add to that the Windows Vista OS, and a 4500 RPM PATA hard drive, then you have a slow system. It comes with only a 3-cell battery which last only over 1 hour. The hard drive is also only 40GB. On the good side you have a large screen with high resolution.

Overall, I think MSI's Wind U100 is alot more powerful, spec-wise. In fact it cost a lot less for only $329.00 USD.
