How to Become a Morning Person

Posted by Valencia on January 5th, 2009

In the past year or so I’ve become a morning person, which is odd considering I’ve never been one to wake up before seven and be able to function for the greater part of the day. But once I made the decision to go to bed early, and get my lazy butt out the bed in the mornings, my entire routine changed - for the better.

I’m a big procrastinator. But I finally realized that procrastination was an open invitation for stress. I’ll admit, I work best under pressure - but it’s not fun. And honestly, I was tired of always feeling rushed, and there was always some task lodged in the back of my mind. I can’t explain it, but once I made the decision to become an early riser, everything fell into place. And once everything on my checklist was out the way…I had the rest of the day to do whatever.

Think you might work best in the morning, consider three ways to become a morning person.

Is Your Project Making You Sick?

Posted by Valencia on January 2nd, 2009

We all know that certain jobs can make a person sick. Everything starts off great, and you feel fulfilled. But over time something starts to happen. And before you know it, the thought of going to work or doing your job triggers anxiety, headaches, or stomach pain.

Most people spend at least 40 hours a week at their job. And for this reason, it’s important to love (or at least like) what you do. But this isn’t always the case, and the idea of going to work can make a person physically sick. This is when it’s time to find a new occupation.

As freelancers, we deal with some good clients and some bad clients. On one hand, we may feel tempted to bend over backwards for our loyal clients. And on the other hand, we may want to tell our difficult clients to take their projects and shove it where the sun doesn’t shine.

But whether you’re trying to secure additional assignments, or get through a difficult project with your sanity intact, there are five things you should never say to a client.

You Might Be a Workaholic If…

Occasionally I’ll jokingly refer to myself as a workaholic. I don’t like to be interrupted when working, and once I enter my creative zone…there’s no stopping me. But in the back of mind I know that I’m not really a workaholic. I do have a strong work ethic, and I am not afraid of hard work. But unlike workaholics, I have balance.

I didn’t realize the severity of this problem until I stumbled upon a WA or Workaholics Anonymous forum. Work can become a real obsession; and anyone who loves their job “too much” may be headed down a dangerous path.

So, how do you know if you’re a workaholic? According to a few online surveys, you might be a workaholic if…

Four Things to Do With Your Free Time

Posted by Valencia on December 19th, 2008

So, I had a little free time towards the end of last week, and I did something I haven’t done in a long time - absolutely nothing. Let me explain.

I hate working around the clock - this schedule got old within my first six months of freelancing. And since then, I’ve come up with a schedule that allows me to freelance and still take time for myself during the day. Well the past couple of months have been a little hectic - bit off more than I could chew…again. And I’ve had to tweek my schedule in order to meet deadlines. But, there’s finally light at the end of the tunnel. A project has ended -and I have to say - I’m not disappointed.
