Can excessive washing damage your skin?

Tuesday 30 December 2008 @ 2:22 pm

Excessive / Bad washing and skincare practices. When a person sees they have dry skin, their first thought can often be to apply water, to moisturise it. What this in fact does is wash away the protective sebum layer from the skin leaving the skin exposed to further damage. The way to moisturise your skin is to use a proper moisturiser regularly, but particularly after skin-damaging practices such as shaving or washing. Washing too frequently (i.e. : more than once a day) and using hot water as opposed to lukewarm water will dry your skin out. Using a flannel or loafer which scrub the skin will also remove more sebum and cause more harm than good, as will wiping or rubbing the body dry with a towel after bathing, as opposed to dabbing

Is Surgery the best option for baldness

Saturday 20 December 2008 @ 6:10 am

like all other types of surgeries, the outcome of hair replacement surgery is not entirely predictable. Let us always bear in mind that people have varied reactions to surgery and the healing capacity of a person always plays a great role in the success of the procedure. Common set-backs in hair replacement surgery includes the rejection of the transplant. Some or all of the plug grafts, as these implanted hair parches are called, may not be accepted by the system of the person and the plugs would fall out before establishing regrowth in its location. Other complications would include excessive bleeding and scarring of tissues.  The high cost is another issue to consider, many visits may be required and might not meet your expected needs.  Before and after pictures of successful work can be encouraging to people thinkinking however did you ever consider the patients who were no so successful

Blue Christmas

Wednesday 17 December 2008 @ 1:51 pm

Not all holiday depression has anything to do with loss or failure or death, or even anything obvious. Sometimes people tend to just get depressed around the holidays. Yet those without an obvious “reason” feel that they really shouldn’t be depressed and are least likely to reach out for help. It’s as though people who have experienced trauma have more of a “right” to experience holiday depression than those who appear to have everything that could need or want.

People fail to recognize that holidays are stressful enough to trigger a depression. Sometimes the hustle and bustle and the need to produce (food, presents, parties, and the lot) are enough to seriously frustrate a person right into a depression. Feeling disconnected with the holidays can easily lead to a mild to moderate depression

Be gentle to yourself this Holiday Season, dont set your standards too high, some gentle exercise like walking is an excellent was to keep active and alert.

What is a spinal cord Injury

Saturday 13 December 2008 @ 8:50 am

A Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) is damage or trauma to the spinal cord that results in a loss or impaired function causing reduced mobility or feeling. Common causes of damage are trauma (car accident, gunshot, falls, sports injuries, etc.) or disease (Transverse Myelitis, Polio, Spina Bifida, Friedreich’s Ataxia, etc.). The spinal cord does not have to be severed in order for a loss of functioning to occur. In most people with SCI, the spinal cord is intact, but the cellular damage to it results in loss of functioning. SCI is very different from back injuries such as ruptured disks, spinal stenosis or pinched nerves

HIV Prevention

Tuesday 2 December 2008 @ 1:44 pm

The World Health Organization recommends male circumcision as an important element in HIV prevention programs, and the procedure is promoted in high-risk heterosexual populations. While the benefits of circumcision are well-documented (they also include reduced rates of urinary tract infection, penile cancer, and cervical cancer and chlamydia in female partners), there remains a concern that adult circumcision may impair sexual function.

A new study has found that adult circumcisions do not lead to sexual difficulties among men who were already sexually active. The study appears in the November 2008 issue of The Journal of Sexual Medicine the official journal of the International Society for Sexual Medicine.

How important are our Nails?

Friday 28 November 2008 @ 1:22 pm

“The nails can be windows to a patient’s overall health, and while the nail itself is dead tissue, the areas under the cuticle and beneath the nail are alive,” stated Dr. Scher. “These areas are particularly vulnerable to infection and damage, which is why it is important to see a dermatologist with any nail changes, so that the problem can be diagnosed and treated.”

Cosmetics

Keeping the nails healthy and neat looking has become an important grooming ritual for both men and women as the number of consumers that frequent nail salons and use nail cosmetics at home has increased.

“Nail cosmetics and salon services are generally quite safe, but there are potential problem areas associated with the use of nail cosmetics and salon services: infection, allergic reactions and mechanical damage to the nail,” said Dr. Scher. “While these are fairly rare occurrences, they can be serious and consumers should take some simple measures to guard against these potential health concerns.”

Contracting an infection is the most serious health risk related to nail cosmetics, particularly from manicure and pedicure tools and implements that have not been properly sterilized. Viral, bacterial and fungal infections may be transmitted to unsuspecting consumers from improperly sterilized implements.

MRSA

Friday 28 November 2008 @ 1:14 pm

In “Epidemiology, clinical manifestations, and treatment options of skin and soft tissue infection caused by community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureaus,” a clinical overview published in the Journal of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, Farley observes that the spread of methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is no longer a concern only in hospitals. It has become a complex community and public health concern about which clinicians, including nurse practitioners, must be increasingly cognizant. In a review of 40 years of research, Farley provides nurse practitioners and other clinicians a unique roadmap to understand, recognize, and potentially prevent transmission of MRSA as he highlights current thinking about MRSA risk factors, the skin and soft tissue infections hallmark of community-acquired MRSA, and the current best methods of diagnosis and treatment.

How much damage is smoking doing to your health?

Friday 21 November 2008 @ 11:52 am
