Smokers are putting their lives and families at risk
Welsh smokers are putting their lives and families at risk by not putting out cigarettes safely, according to the fire safety charity Firebrake Wales.
Last year in Wales, 13 people died and 10 a month were injured in smoking-related home fires. Many fires happen at night when people fall asleep or smoke in bed and furniture or fabrics are set alight.
Worryingly, research shows that smokers are less likely than non-smokers to have working smoke alarms which could alert them to the dangers and give the chance of escape.
"It is vital to make sure all smoking materials are put out safely, especially before bed time," according to Kim Smith, CEO of Firebrake Wales. "The best way to cut the risk is not to smoke indoors at all."
The Fire and Rescue Services in Wales recommend that homes have a working smoke alarm on each floor and that these are tested once a week.
They can supply and fit free smoke alarms in any home in Wales and provide free advice on reducing the risk of home fire. To arrange a visit and free smoke alarms, phone 0800 169 1234 or visit www.fireflash.org

Pembrokeshire residents recycle your Christmas trees
Pembrokeshire residents are being urged to recycle their Christmas trees once the festivities are over.
Pembrokeshire County Council has teamed up with the Pembrokeshire Machinery Ring to hold free tree-shredding sessions in communities across the County in January.
It is estimated that an extra 30% extra waste is produced at this time of year.
As well as shredding real trees and their woody trimmings, waste staff say fruit and vegetable peelings can also go in compost bins, along with cardboard egg boxes, tea bags, coffee grounds, crumpled card and newspapers.
However, leftover cooked food should not be included.
Tree/trimming shredding sessions are taking place at the following venues:
Saturday 3rd January
County Hall, Haverfordwest - 9.15am to 12.15pm

Hairspray Hazard for Christmas Trees
Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service are aware that a recent radio programme recommended the use of hairspray to reduce needle loss from real Christmas Trees.
Station Manager Gary Williams of the Community Fire Safety Department is urging the public not to spray their Christmas Tree with any form of hair product as this could increase the risk of a fire occurring as well as the severity.
Real Christmas Trees are an important part of the Christmas celebrations but there are steps which people can take to make sure they have a safe Christmas.
1. Buy a tree from a reputable dealer.
2. The Norway Spruce is the ?traditional tree? but the Nordman Fir is also available which has better needle retention.
3. The only way to reduce needle loss is to cut the bottom off the tree and stand in a water container for at least 24 hours.
4. Select a location for the tree carefully - avoid fireplaces, heating vents and any heat producing appliances that will dry out the tree.
5. Mount the tree in a stand containing water which will keep the tree fresh and green whilst reducing the risk of fire.
6. Do not use candles near the tree and ensure that if presents are stored beneath the tree, they are away from ignition sources.
7. Ensure that fairy lights are checked prior to fitting and are in good condition.
During Christmas festivities there is a potential for increased risk of fire, due to the increase in numbers of visitors in the home, alcohol consumption and cooking activities.
Members of the public should check their smoke detectors to ensure they are working and should not remove batteries for use in presents.
Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service has a website www.mawwfire.gov.uk where further information on home fire safety can be found.
To book a free home fire safety check - visit our website or call 0800 169 1234.

Your Local Coastguard Operations Room in Pembrokeshire
Although the cold and darkness of winter is now well and truly upon us, the Coastguard Operation Room at Milford Haven does not hibernate and we are open for business 24hrs a day, 7 days a week for all your queries on anything maritime. It appears that since the ‘Industrial Action’ of the summer the public still thinks that we are not approachable. WE ARE the staff manned this station throughout the problems and are eager to get all sea- farers and coastal users back into the terrific liaison we had prior to the ‘summer of discontent’.-
Tell us if you are planning a passage, we will log your departure and estimated time of arrival from port to port, how many people are on board, your safety equipment and details of your vessel.
Register your vessel with us, (The Coastguard 66 Scheme is FREE) then we will have all your details, vessel description, sails + sail Nos. safety equipment, including radio communications and your usual place of use. Your own details and who to inform in case of problems.
Ask us for the local Inshore Forecasts, or if going further a field the Shipping Forecast, we can give you up to the minute information of passing weather, wind direction and speed from local weather buoys.
The Operation Room has equipment to forecast tides, both high and low for the whole of the British Isles on a yearly basis, so you can plan your trips for the coming summer now.
Information regarding the Military Ranges along our coast can be gathered from a call to the operations room, the firing ranges out to sea, danger areas etc. and whether footpaths on these ranges are open or closed.
If you own or operate an ‘Activity Centre’ and are into any sea or coastal activities please let us know - Where and when. What you are doing and how many are doing it. Clampdown on speeders
A clampdown on speeding motorists is being proposed by ministers as part of a bid to cut road deaths.
Drivers who break the speed limit by a large margin face being given six penalty points, meaning they would be banned after two offences.
Other measures will target drink drivers and those who put lives at risk by taking to the wheel under the influence of other drugs.
Provisional Government figures have showed the number of people killed on the roads in spring this year fell by 20 per cent compared with the same period in 2007.
There were 580 fatalities in April-June 2008 compared with 721 in the same three months last year, the statistics showed.
But Road Safety Minister Jim Fitzpatrick believes more can be done to cut the numbers further and will outline the proposals in a written statement to the Commons.
They will be the subject of a three-month consultation.
