I've always greeted the New Year with so much hope and happiness. For the first time in my life on earth, I do not have the same feeling. For seven days now, I've seen so much suffering and death in a small strip of land called Gaza. It is so easy for us to accept the rationale behind the current bombardment of Palestinians. We've always been taught that Israel and the Jews have been living in terror all these years. Because we still feel the collective guilt of indifference to the persecution and murder of the Jews by the Nazi's, we turn a blind eye to the the sufferings of the Palestinians.
The creation of the state of Israel uprooted and displaced millions of Palestinians. The creation separated families and created one of the biggest refugee problems the modern world had ever seen. Let me throw these questions to you just so that I can find justifications for Israel's so called defensive action. How would you react when the same is done to you? What would you do if you were under occupation for six decades wherein your life hangs in the balance? What would you do when your life is slowly being snuffed out by a blockade which deprives you of dignity and a decent life? I suppose you would resist and resort to whatever means to protect your existence. Israel is not a victim here. The rocket attacks they are scared of is nothing compared to the fear they have instilled in the people of Gaza for the last sixty years.
I denounce any form of violence or terrorism. But how can we as human beings stand idly by while a people is driven to extinction? What we are witnessing now is a battle between David and Goliath. Only this time around, Israel is Goliath. I cannot see the logic in killing an entire family when the only target is the father. The last Israeli air strike killed seven innocent children. Are they terrorists too or is this Israel's way of preventive measure? Please help me make some sense of this insanity we are witnessing now.
Perhaps it would be better for the Palestinians to just all die. Generations of Palestinians have grown up without a land they can call home anyway. Perhaps it would best that they do not exist so the world can be a safer place to live in as Israel and its Western allies would like us to believe.
As an advocate of human rights, I cannot see any form of justification for such a barbaric act by Israel. Israel can fool all of the people sometime, but not all the time. You can call me what you want. I would welcome any criticism from anybody who can answer the questions I wrote above. Nobody has the right to impose their will on anybody. A people have the right of self-determination. Israel should own up to its actions as well. After all these bombardments are through, they have to be made accountable for this crime against humanity. Genocide is genocide. Eradicating a race by whatever means is genocide.
