Showgirls Provincetown at the Palms Springs International Film Festival
Showgirls, Provincetown is playing at the Palms Springs International Film Festival.
Over the course of the summer of 2007 director, C.Fitz documented the legendary Provincetown stage production of “Showgirls,” and the stories of the people involved. Her camera crews descended upon the tiny idyllic fishing village located on the tip of Cape Cod that is the backdrop for “Showgirls.” Every Monday evening musical performers, comedians, performance artists, drag queens, dog acts, and those who could only be described as, talent challenged, emphatically conducted their acts with the goal of the $500.00 prize at the end of the night. C.Fitz taps the Host of “ShowGirls,” Ryan Landry as the guide throughout the film to not only introduce the show on stage, but also the viewer to the town and performers offstage and backstage. Through their performances and interviews we are introduced to a group of misfits who are regulars in “Showgirls” whom Ryan has labeled “The Gold Dust Orphans.” These unique and creative individuals share their stories and why they keep performing week after week. A sampling of these characters are: “Deborah Downer,” “Della Cattesen,” and “Steamy Brown.” Such nationally known acts as Randy Roberts and Varla Jean Merman also grace the “Showgirls” stage. They both give their perspective in the film on the importance of playing “Showgirls” to make it in Provincetown. The film makes you fall in love with not only these characters but also their passion for the stage. Jon Arterton hoping to record with Yo-Yo Ma !
Jon Arterton, conductor of Provincetown’s Outer Cape Chorale, is hoping to win a chance to record with Yo-Yo Ma. A few days ago he read something about Indabamusic, an organization that helps musicians from around the world collaborate via the internet. They were having a contest, and the winner gets to make a recording with Yo-Yo Ma. Everyone was given an audio recording of Yo-Yo Ma playing “Dona Nobis Pacem” on his cello, and contestants were given the chance to record an accompaniment for it. Arterton got out his Echoplex – an electronic looping device – and began creating his entry. He sang a musical phrase to accompany the cello part, and then began to add various layers over it. In this case, he created twelve different vocal layers that he added to Yo-Yo Ma’s playing, one by one. You can hear the result at www.indabamusic.com. If you like it, you can even vote for him and help send a local musician off to record with Yo-Yo Ma!!!

December 26 - Jan 3rd all Performances at 7pm No Performance on New Years Day. tick, tick... BOOM! is a musical written by American composer Jonathan Larson. It tells the story of an aspiring composer named Jon, who lives in New York City in 1990. Jon is worried he has made the wrong career choice to be part of the performing arts. The story is autobiographical, as stated by Larson's father in the liner notes of the cast recording – Larson had been trying to establish himself in theatre since the early 1980s. Counter Productions is a community based performing arts organization with a commitment to cultivating and supporting our thriving community of theatre artists and audiences. For many of us, the experience of theatre, be it as artist or audience member often leads to discoveries we may never have traveled to, whether that be in the realization of a new artistic concept or a story not yet heard. Counter Productions' goal is to invest itself in Provincetown's own unique voice. TICKETS MAY BE PURCHASED BY CALLING 508 487- 7487.
