Flick open the familiar Audi switchblade key, twist on the ignition, and a deep exhaust burble penetrates the cabin as the RS-trim 4.2-liter V8 comes alive. The Saab 9-3 has never been a fierce player in its segment, lacking the killer instinct of some of its more formidable rivals, namely the Audi A4 and BMW 3-series. Sure it offers a pair of turbocharged power plants, including a range-topping 255-horsepower V-6, but its Achilles heel lies up front, as in front-wheel drive — a feature that can diminish dynamics and degrade feel.

Toyota took a fresh look at one of the prime vehicles they use to target 16 to 30 year old drivers, and ended up with the slick 2009 Toyota Matrix. With a redesigned exterior meant to flow from back to front, the new version of Toyota’s five-door crossover is impressive from the outside.
