Power And Strength Equipment. Don’t Need It!

November 17th, 2008 · 1 Comment

Power and strength are pursued by many. We want (and need) to be stronger and quicker.

Consequently many products that assist in development of power and strength has been developed (most are useless, to say the least).

Everyone seems to seek a ‘magic pill’ that will provide the increase in strength and power.

No such thing (shocking)! The most effective power and strength building techniques require no equipment. None!

I’m talking about the ultimate strength and power building exercise - sprinting.

Sprinting is full body workout that engages all muscles. Don’t believe me? Try it!

Legs, back. arms, core - all is involved.

Suggested workout

  • Beginner: 10×40m sprints
  • Intermediate: 10×60m sprints
  • Advanced: 10×100m sprints

Remember, the simplest things are usually the most effective.

Best Way to Avoid Bad Posture (and Chronic Pain)

October 10th, 2008 · 1 Comment

Best Ways to Avoid Bad Posture

Best way to avoid bad posture is not to have it in the first place.

Bad posture happens due to inactivity and lack in variety of movement.

That fact is important. It implies that not all movement is equal and that repetitive movements will cause muscular imbalances, compensations, tension and pain.

The best way to avoid bad posture (are you ready?) is to be active and to do variety of movements throughout the day.

Variety is the key word.

If you stick to one type of movement there is a good chance that imbalance will peek it’s ugly head and plant seeds of pain.

Lets take tennis as an example. It is a fun and popular game, yet the movements involved are very repetitive and bring much pain and frustration to unsuspecting tennis lovers.

Constant rotation to one side (we play with either right or left hand) sprouts imbalance, tension, pressure and pain. Ever heard of a ‘tennis elbow’? Very painful and takes a while to heal. Lets not forget torn muscles, knee and shoulder injuries.

Best way to avoid bad posture

  • Stay active (move!)
  • Engage in variety of activities and movements
    • Yoga
    • Pilates
    • Kettlebell Training
    • Play on a playground (I bring my kids as an excuse)
    • Hang on pullup bars and do monkey bars regularly
    • Hike
    • Climb things (rock climbing, jungle gyms, anything else that you can think of)
    • Swim
  • Relax, think happy thoughts and have fun
