Learning by blogging, iCAMP project

Thursday, December 04, 2008

You can learn by blogging, iCAMP (Intercultural learning campus) wants you to know. iCAMP is a three-year project funded by the European Union.

There is an existing gap between educational software tools (teacher-controlled) and self-directed social software students use in their spare time, such as blogs, messaging, feeds and other social networking services. iCAMP researchers try to close the gap. They believe that the tools and learning approaches iCAMP has pioneered have the potential to transform how institutions of higher education work.

The iCAMP researchers were guided by an educational theory called constructivism. They believe that students gain new knowledge and skills most readily by working together with others on projects that they themselves define and manage, facilitated rather than controlled by teachers.

In addition to the specifics of what students learn, iCAMP’s approach prepares students to be more self directed, teamwork oriented, and technologically adept later in life.

The iCAMP researchers believe that blogs are the most important single tool. They are really easy to use, people like them, and they can be used in lots of different activities and learning environments. So the researchers developed FeedBack, a system that essentially lets blogs and bloggers communicate with each other easily and manage automatic feeds and updates smoothly.

the researchers went on to create additional communication and collaboration tools. One of these tools is an open-source software package called iLOGUE.

The iLOGUE tool “scaffolds” self-directed learning by guiding learners through the steps of specifying a learning contract, setting goals and sub-goals, identifying resources, and maintaining a learning diary.

People start by entering their objectives and resources. They then maintain a conversational, reflective diary, and discuss their learning progress and problems with the facilitator and their peers.

the iCAMP team are excited about the potential of their approach and software tools to create a rich, empowering and easy-to-use environment for interactive, student-driven learning.

Several universities in the east of Europe are already offering iCAMP-based courses.

Alcohol effects to teenager's brain

Why teenagers shouldn't drink alcohol? The Science Inside Alcohol Project, an alcohol education effort of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), has the answer to that question.

According to the project funded by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), new and ongoing brain research shows that important brain regions and their interconnections are still developing well into a person's twenties. The brain is made up of more than 100 billion neurons, each making tens of thousands of connections. Alcohol can damage or even kill neurons, perhaps altering development of those parts of the adolescent brain that are still forming.

Effects of alcohol to teenagers:
-- Make bad decisions. The prefrontal cortex, which is involved in planning and decision-making, does not completely mature until after the teen years. Using alcohol can harm a teen's ability to reason and weigh options instead of just doing something because it is fun or feels good.

-- Develop a tolerance for alcohol and drink more over time. When adolescents drink on multiple occasions, their brains develop tolerance to alcohol, requiring more alcohol to obtain the same effects as previously. This encourages higher levels of use, potentially leading to alcohol abuse and even dependence. The highest rates of abuse and dependence on alcohol have been reported among youth in their late teens and early twenties, followed by 12-17 year olds.

-- Take risks they usually would not take. Connections between regions of the prefrontal cortex and the ventral striatum, an important part of the brain's reward system, are important in regulating impulsive behavior and are still maturing during adolescence. Alcohol can affect those connections, making teens more likely to do impulsive things they later may regret – like drinking and driving or having sex.

-- Harm their memories. The hippocampus, or the area in the brain that stores memory, is still maturing during adolescence. Research shows that ingesting even small amounts of alcohol can make teens less likely to recall something they learned earlier or remember what they did while drinking.

-- Cause problems with medications. Medication for attention deficit disorder, bipolar disorder or other problems with the brain may react badly with alcohol. For instance, if a teen takes Ritalin and drinks alcohol it may increase the effects of Ritalin, affecting the ability to perform tasks that require complete concentration. For those taking lithium for bipolar disorder, drinking alcohol, particularly in large quantities, can impair judgment, thinking and motor skills.

8-year-old boy writes "How to Talk to Girls" book

Wednesday, December 03, 2008

Pick up a book called "How to Talk to Girls" if you need an advice from the 8-year-old boy author.

This book is a compilation of the 8-year-old Alec Greven's experiences talking to girls on the playground. It began as a handwritten, $3 pamphlet. Now he publishes it and he thinks he knows better than you. LOL. Greven is a fourth-grader from Castle Rock, Colorado.

Here are sample lines/advice from the book:
"Sometimes you get a girl to like you. Then she ditches you. Tip: about 73% of regular girls ditch boys. 98% of pretty girls ditch boys. Life is hard, move on."

"It is easy to spot pretty girls because they have big earrings, fancy dresses and all the jewelry."

This is the photo of Alec Graven, holding his book "How to Talk to Girls." It hit the shelves nationwide last week.
Interested? Buy "How to Talk to Girls" book by Alec Greven at Amazon for only $9.99.

Marriage Calculator, divorce360.com reveals

You do not have to trust a computer to predict the outcome of your marriage, do you? Marriage Calculator from divorce360.com predicts the likelihood of you to get a divorce. That is not something you wanna know, for sure. But for the curious minds, this may be something you might want to check.

The Marriage Calculator" is based on certain factors. The statistics is computed from U.S. Census data, divorce profiles and other previous study results. These are the "divorce" factors that were incorporated in the calculator:

* Gender

* When You Married

* Education

* Age When You Were Married

* How Many Years You've Been Married

Would you trust a computer when it says you will be divorced in a year or so? You shouldn't. The results are purely hypothetical. Your marriage will always be decided by you and your partner. The computer has no concept at all of the individuals it is dealing with.

Do you have relationship-contingent self-esteem?

Are you suffering from relationship-contingent self-esteem (RCSE)? If you are into a relationship and when even the most minor or common relationship-based incidents, such as miscommunication, or a critique of one's personality or appearance makes you so depressed, then you probably are suffering from RCSE.

According to University of Houston researcher Chip Knee, relationship-contingent self-esteem is an unhealthy factor in romantic relationships. Individuals with high levels of RCSE are very committed to their relationships, but they also find themselves at risk to become devastated when something goes wrong -- even a relatively minor event. Men or women with RCSE may tend to evaluate their self-worth solely based on the outcomes of their romantic interactions.

Individuals with RCSE also are prone to react more emotionally to relationship-based situations. Instead of taking a step back, analyzing a situation and determining how to best address it, those with RCSE respond immediately and impulsively.

RCSE might place one at risk for serious mood changes after break-ups, divorce or threats to one's relationship. Identifying it during the early stages of a relationship can prevent such negative outcomes or help partners recognize that they are incompatible.

New Tallest Building in the World -- Shanghai, China

Tuesday, December 02, 2008

The Shanghai Center or Shanghai Tower, in Lujiazui financial district, will soon hold the title as the tallest building in the world. Just yesterday, the groundbreaking ceremony was held for the 632-meter (2,074-foot-tall) twisting cylindrical structure that will dwaft the Taipei 101 building (considered today as the tallest at 509 meters from base to top of spire). [see photo after the jump]

The Shanghai Tower was designed by Gensler.
Shanghai Tower will be shaped like a soft triangle, have a skin of two walls of glass and steel, and will generate some of its energy from wind turbines. The building will have office space, residences, a hotel, retail space and restaurants.
The 128-story Shanghai Tower will be a double-skinned building that torques and tapers as it rises. Its upper floors reportedly will contain the world’s highest unenclosed observation deck.

Construction is expected to be completed in 2014.

Asthma inhalers switch to HFA

No more chlorofluorocarbons, or CFCs, for asthma inhalers. Starting December 31, all albuterol inhalers will be powered by the more eco-friendly chemical HFA, or hydrofluoroalkane.

The inhaler switch from CFC to HFA will be a bit pricey for users. The new inhalers will cost more, $30 to $60 compared to as little as $5 or $10.
The Food and Drug Administration has long warned it was coming, and lung specialists have spent the past year easing many of the nation's 20 million asthma patients - as well as millions of emphysema sufferers who also use albuterol to ease breathing - into it.
What do patients need to know as they switch?

-Expect a softer puff instead of the CFC version's cold blast of air in the back of the throat.

"They are getting their medicine," says Dr. David Rosenstreich of New York's Montefiore Medical Center. "They have to get used to it and be aware that it's working."

-The new inhalers clog more often because HFA makes the drug stickier. Clean the hole weekly, following the instructions unique to each brand.

-Never get the whole device wet.

The FDA says there's plenty of supply; it gave manufacturers several years to ramp up before the ban.

Undesirable Gay men takes risky sexual behavior

This study is among the first to examine the link between sex and mental health of gay men. According to a new research out of the University of Toronto, gay men who are not considered sexually desirable (or unattractive) are more likely to engage in risky sexual behavior.

Adam Isaiah Green, Assistant Professor of Sociology found that young, white, middle-class men are considered much more sexually desirable than men who are racial minorities, over 40 and poor. The author also learned that for gay men, being considered sexually undesirable can have serious health consequences ranging from psychological issues to risky sexual behavior.

Further, the research found that undesirable gay men face stigmatization, avoidance and outright rejection, which can lead to depression, anxiety and alcohol abuse. It also highlighted cases whereby undesirable gay men will forego safe-sex discussion and, in some cases, condom use, in the context of sex with a more attractive partner.

Tina Fey - Vanity Fair cover January 2009

Who says Tina Fey can't be on Vanity Fair cover? We all love Tina Fey, don't we? Her Saturday Night Live impersonations of Sarah Palin were simply funny and not to mention unforgettable. Because of Tina Fey's popularity, Vanity Fair is featuring her on the January 2009 cover. [photo and video after the jump]

There is one fact that I've just learned about Tina Fey - she has a scar on her face. Why didn't I see it every time she's on TV?
Liz Lemon favors her right side. That's because a faint scar runs across Tina Fey's left cheek, the result of a violent cutting attack by a stranger when Fey was five. Her husband says, "It was in, like, the front yard of her house, and somebody who just came up, and she just thought somebody marked her with a pen." You can hardly see the scar in person. But I agree with Richmond that it makes Fey more lovely, like a hint of Marlene Dietrich noir glamour in a Preston Sturges heroine.
Anyway, here if the cover photo of Tina Fey on Vanity Fair.
Watch video: Tina Fey Behind the Scenes VANITY FAIR Photo Shoot. She is very sexy. Guys, you should start drooling.

Surfin' Bird: The Bird's the Word video

Monday, December 01, 2008

This song is the best song to play to stop your next door neighbor from having very loud sex at 2AM. It is the Surfin' Bird by The Trashmen. Surfin' Bird is a combination of two R&B hits by The Rivingtons, "Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow" and "The Bird's the Word".

I think this is also the song the TV cartoon show "Family Guy" always plays.

*****
SURFIN' BIRD Lyrics
THE TRASHMEN (GARRETT 4002, 1963)

A-well-a everybody's heard about the bird
B-b-b-bird, bird, bird, b-bird's the word
A-well-a bird, bird, bird, the bird is the word
A-well-a bird, bird, bird, well the bird is the word
A-well-a bird, bird, bird, b-bird's the word

Magnapinna giant squid and whale videos

Wow! Look at this giant squid! The rarely seen Magnapinna squid looks like an alien clinging to a post. Shell oil company Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) captured this video of the squid from an ocean depth of 2.5 kilometers.

The "elbowed" squid was visiting the Perdido drilling site in the Gulf of Mexico.

Magnapinna giant squid video:

The Magnapinna squid was first reported in 1998 by University of Hawaii biologist Richard Young.

Here is another video of a whale barely touching the ROV.

It is so interesting to see life at the bottom of our oceans.

Beyonce: Robot Gloves

Saturday, November 29, 2008

Beyonce Glove- What's with Beyonce's glove? Beyoncé has a robot-like glove that was created by longtime jeweler, New York-based Lorraine Schwartz. What made it so special is that it is made in titanium, the "king of metals" and a very rare metal at that. Titanium is also priceless. Just look at photo of Beyonce's glove and tell me what you think.

Here are facts on Beyonce’s titanium glove:
• Schwartz had her artisans working day and night on the piece, laboring 24 hours a day until it was complete.
• It fits literally like a glove. Beyoncé’s entire upper arm was cast in wax so that the titanium piece would wrap perfectly.
• It’s actually several pieces, including a ring, a glove and a separate component that covers the upper arm. It can be worn all together or separately.
• It looks heavier than it is. Titanium is about 45 percent lighter than steel.
• The glove was Beyoncé’s concept all the way.

If you purchase a Fujitsu laptop today, you can have a brand new Fujitsu notebook every three years for the rest of your life. One very important note: it will be free of charge.

To qualify for a free laptop every three years, you need to do three things:
