Twingr trying to be the new Twitter

With Twitter being so big and powerful in the social networking arena, we have started to see spin-offs like Yammer and now the newest spin-off, Twingr.

With Twingr, you can create your own version of Twitter for any group you like, and Twingr will host it.  The service, created by Killer Startups just  launched in private alpha and is open to the first 500 micro-blogging communities that get on it.

Like Twitter, you can send out 140-character messages, follow what other people in your Twingr group are saying, and send direct messages to them as well. A nice little change is that Twingr offers a box where you can paste links without taking up any of your allotted characters.  TinyURLs are a thing of the past.

If you look at Yammer you will see similarities to that of Yingr.  With Yammer the focus is on companies and bringing the ability to communicate through private messaging for its employees.  Yingr wants to bring the same idea but only amongst the micro-blogging community.

Not sure if I will jump on the bandwagon but one advantage it does have over Twitter is that it seems to not go down as often.  Nothing frustrates me more than typing a message and then hitting update to only have Twitter not respond.  Follow me on Twitter by clicking here

How YouTube plans to monetize

YouTube has been trying to figure out how to monetize their site for sometime now.  The site brings in an extraordinary amount of traffic  but lacks the ability to capitalize when it comes to ad revenue.  Looks like they are taking the necessary steps to correct this problem.  YouTube has announced on Wednesday that they will be selling sponsored video spots based on search terms.

You ask, how is this different from Google?  Well, it is no different than Google.  A sponsor will bid on a keyword.  Let’s take “LG Electronics” for example.  When someone searches for “LG Electronics” they will see a related ad above the videos that appear.

The trick is going to be to not to ruin the users experience.  YouTube is going to have to work on the positioning of the ad videos so not to interfere with the regular videos.  Fortunetely for them the users are so used to sponsored ads from Google this will probably not cause a major problem so long as the videos are postioned properly.

What other ideas should YouTube look at in helping to monetize their site?
