Let's face it. Dropping is the important thing to the majority.
Do you get much internal links from those 300 drops at all? Just curious...

The truth is, if you just drop and never mind about my articles, why should I mind yours?
Who wish to have higher quality traffic from EC? I am ONE!

I've gotten some very good staying traffic with EC. Much depends on my day if I stay and read or I just drop. Many times I drop because I don't have time for much of anything else and then I go back later in the day or that evening to read. Often times the later gives me even more to read with other people's comments to boot.

I've gotten some loyal readers from EntreCard. That's not to say that if I removed my widget they wouldn't disappear as quickly as they came, but I'm happy with what I've gained from here.

Basically, your content has to catch the interest of someone. If someone would rather watch paint dry or grass grow than read about what you have to say, then obviously you are not going to cultivate that person necessarily.
You need to worry more about what you are doing, as opposed to what the people that come to your blog do. That's the key thing: that they are COMING in the first place.

Like a lot of people I have acquired a few loyal readers, and a good good links to my site from competitors in my niche. I, in turn have linked to them. But I do get a lot of drop and run... a few people stick around if something catches their interest... For me, I am not really concerned with car insurance, "how to make money online" article, blogs about blogging in general, or investment opinions. I dig history, politics, comedy... and personal blogs sometimes catch my eye too. Sometimes I'll drop and run... but frankly, if I am not interested I am not going to stick around.

It is possible then. As a new member (I still consider myself new for 3 weeks), I find it a bit awkward to maintain people. But looking at what you have shared, it is very inspiring that you get things very positively such as those loyal readers.

It depends on the traffic and to some extent who you drop on. I've found that I get the best quality if I stick to dropping (and commenting) on similar blogs. If your content doesn't draw them in, then you'll just be another drop to them.

I've been thinking about this a lot and I have a few answers that might help.
When you joined EC, what was your purpose? Was it to:
1) Gain readers from the EC community.
2) Gain credits so you could advertise on other blogs.
3) Gain readers from non-ECers.
4) $$$ (can be comments or buys)
Most people would probably say all three. But there lies the problem. They are all mutually exclusive (besides #2 within the EC community).
When you advertise on EC according to the 'popularity', # of drops, or price you are advertising to other ECers and hoping for EC readers.
When you advertise according to alexa, compete, or Google Trends you are advertising for non-ECers. When this happens, chances are you won't receive as many drops. I call this the 'John Chow' effect. When an ECer advertises on JohnChow.com they are expecting hundreds of drops. This just doesn't happen because he isn't as active in the community as some of the other high priced advertising spots. However, he may provide 70 clicks and 30 drops. Which means the 40 people who didn't drop were interested in only your ad and not the fact that it was part of the community.
When someone advertises for $$$ or comments, they are hoping for visitors interested in their product or specific blog. This is something else entirely. Instead of solely advertising to the highest price or newest blog, they are restricted to a sole category or categories specific to their blog type. This limits the amount drops if their category is small or inactive.
Of course, sometimes you hit goldmine websites and get #1, #3 and #4, but it is rare. If a website is extremely popular in both EC and non-EC readers they of a much higher quality and will provide benefits you want to keep secret.

Sam Freedom's Internet Marketing Controversy Blog
I get such a tickle whenever this question resurfaces...
EC is an entrepreneur's vision and, for a steadily increasing benefit, we are helping him grow it. The 3 things about which I remind myself when presented with the "quality traffic" question are these:
- Bloggers, especially brand new ones with no visitors at all, get an INSTANT initial burst of new eyeballs on their site. Total quality or not, if you're a decent blogger, some of those eyeballs stick;
- The more you work EC, the more you benefit from it. And there different angles from which it can be worked and you don't have to work them all. Those who don't have time to drop as much as others can add value to the forums or write articles instead... dropping, however, when they can.
- The question about quality is never quite settled because EC has not only grown but it is growing... and we are still in the earlier stages. There will be far more people coming this way and far more eyeballs on your sites and it will be less a matter of quality than quantity... because the greater the quantity, the greater the chance of there being greater quality.
We can split hairs on that last sentence if we like but the general concept remains sound.
Happy dropping
Sam

Is Entrecard traffic sticky traffic? It can be, but it isn't automatic. You can place the Entrecard on your site and click on 300 Entrecards a day and get traffic. But, what guarantees whether they stay or come back tomorrow?
There are no guarantees. But, if you write good content that is relevant to the traffic that comes from Entrecard you will have a chance to develop a following. If you write often that will encourage a regular readership.
Entrecard is just a traffic advertising tool. What you do when the traffic shows up to your blog determines its value to you and determines if people will return.

@PoemofQuotes Blog
That is a perfect answer. When i joined, i was even ignorant of the EC Community on what they do and what usefulness it offers to bloggers. I only took the advice of one blog reader that I have had that joining EC would be an advantage.
Starting them I tried to discover what i can do to make it to my advantage. So far, I get the hits I dreamed of. But as of now, i want to make a move to the next level of "no hits" only. Of course these drops are pretty helpful. I have to admit my Alexa have been plummeting skyward since i joined. thanks to great droppers and of course, to my dedication to drop as well.
Your post is very educational for me. It goes back to the "purpose" of joining!

I haven't read the comments above but backlinks are abound. Most bloggers are ready and willing to link to a good post or something they've found helpful or funny... I've posted a "Blogs I Like" and added about 10 sites that are somehow beneficial or related to my reader's interests and I plan to do it again soon.
Linking to each other is one of the best things we can do to help build our presence and traffic...

@Sam Freedom's Internet Marketing Controversy Blog:
Thanks for those thoughts. Actually you have the same idea as Brett (TRANSFIGURE) put in my post about this quality traffic stuff. Yes, as EC is growing, with the forum of graham on suggestions to EC, I actually suggested an innovative feature that do not only encourage quantity traffic but as well as quality to them. It was a long suggestion and maybe others have seen it...
Going back to what you have said, there is a point on quantity getting to be quality in the long run. I think I need to persevere on that. After all I am a 3-month old EC Baby.

@ The Realtor:
Actually, I have exchanged links as well in the past. But for the meantime, since my theme is about little stuffs discovered by a blogger around, i am experimenting on my technorati.
I actually make backlinks through commenting and for now, my focus is on technorati to see the effects on it. And it had worked actually. I stopped exchanging links, yet I worked on my commenting and it made my technorati grew from 28 (when I registered last week) to 42 today.
Back links are actually a proven process. I also get traffic from commenting to others.

@PoemofQuotes Blog
I'll be watching for the post. Of course I will share my ideas. Actually i saw a post on this while I surf around today and it also triggered my surest post and an idea to create my little solid circle for quality traffic. So far there are only three of us but with at least three internal links from each other daily, I do hope to combat the bounce rate that comes to my blog caused by droppings...

Ben Barden | Top 10 Blogging Tips
I used to have a personal blog, then I changed it to focus on blogging tips. One week later I found Entrecard, and signed up.
Many of my readers originally came from Entrecard, but not all of my traffic comes from there.
If someone finds my site through Entrecard, and if they like it, they might subscribe and read future posts via a feed reader. Future visits from them wouldn't actually come from Entrecard itself, but Entrecard was responsible for getting them to my site in the first place.
I guess it depends what you mean by "traffic from Entrecard".

Actually, all those majority. What I mean is, majority of peeps up here are more concerned of dropping than anything else. Or am I wrong? So far, my observation is like this. Although I also got some loyal/avid or whatever you may term them from EC, the percentage of 'simply droppers' are still much.
I actually saw the suggestion of Nostradamus that EC can be placed in a second page that opened to at least lessen the bounce rates of the members.
Yes, it is given that one must make a good content but since it is a community to encourage and improve traffic and generally a help to bloggers, and I see how it really helped a lot, maybe there are still big places for innovations?

Same with me. I added the blogs I like to my google reader, so it does not slow me when I drop. I usually spend a couple of hours over the weekend, spending quality time on my favorite blogs. There is amazing content in the EC community, and so diverse

I've made 3 friends from EC and some readers and have become a reader of many blogs as well. I think the beauty of having the EC widget is with so many blogs out there it's impossible to remember the good ones you like and the widget helps you track that and also get credits to advertise- double bonus!

@ Orangeinks
Actually, in my part, I finish dropping for around 6 hours because I "always" "stop, looka, and read" kind of stuff. For me, it's not the problem as well. I am reading plus if I remember goood, I subscribed to some, both in feed and in e-mails...
I am sure you are already too good in this trade. You are the leading figure in our niche. Congratulations! *_^

@Software Outsourcing to China
Hi! i see your ads in almost every blog I visit. What makes you advertise too much? This is one factor I have not given much attention yet: advertising. I am just too lazy to browse where to advertise. I also check the stats and I am always unlucky with whom I advertise my card.
What do you say on this?
You seem to be one of the advertising kings around...?
