The Next Step

Its time to move on, and IMHO the next step is not to add features but welcome other languages.

Begin with Norway, lots of Norwegian blogs are eager to join Entrecard - but they can't because of the language.

My proposal :

Copy the whole EC to a new segment. New database, new website. I can help you translate.

entrecard.com/NO/ ( or entrecard.no )

Announce this with startup early September and that you need 15 Moderators. You will get them within an hour.

A separated system but with equal functionality.

You will be a hit.

I have a multilingual blog, if a Norwegian visit me, they get Norwegian, else English. Allow such blogs to have two EC widgets. The multilingual function will only display one EC according to the language.

Sell Norwegian ads on entrecard.com/NO, Norwegians will pay more.

Then : Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Germany, Holland, France (happy Canadians will join), Russia, Lithuania, Estonia, Poland, Italy, Greece, Iceland etc etc.

Then : China, India, Japan. At this time you will be a millionaire.

Edit : No objections yet, go for it Graham.

That Grrl

I suggested a multi language section/ category before. We used to have a World subcategory in the Dmoz directory when I was there. It was sorted into every language so that sites which were not in English could be listed and found by those who also speak/ write/ read the language.

More languages will require more people who can speak those languages to sift through all the content and find spam/junk blogs. How is Graham going to afford all of that?

New York Nitty-Gritty

we, the members, are the ones weeding out spam now, not "Graham". like the man said above, there would be moderators to carry out those functions as well.

anyone who really understood where the internet is going or is would want to reach other language markets.

How many languages do you need to read to know which blog is real and which is a splog? It's really pretty simple to spot most of them, without reading much at all.

Mainly it is not fair to toss out blogs/ bloggers just cause they don't use English. But they can be in a category just as Arts, Web Comics, and etc have a niche at EC.

Hot Dorkage

I wouldn't even do new database. Just add a 1:many which language(s) the blog is in. I've seen blogs that are in two languages. They put enough english so it qualifies to be in english then they put the real personal comments in their native tongue. From what I can see there's a screaming need for tagalog and indonesian. If you really want to get clever, have the members specify which languages blogs they would like to see and filter all the rest. Many people especially in the non english speaking world, speak two or more languages. And ditto its' pretty clear which are splogs you don t have to read much at all. And blogs such as photo blogs, you could specify that those are primarily visual so they would pass all language filters.
