First Monthly “Top Dropper Day” coming up!

On the last day of this month, we will be starting an official “Top Dropper Day.” What is Top Dropper Day? Glad you asked!
On your Entrecard statistics page, if you scroll down, you can see a list of your top droppers. These are the people who visit your site most frequently to drop a card. The Entrecard Top Droppers list looks like this:
Now, on the last day of this month, we are going to make a HUGE push to get as many Entrecarders as possible to give their top droppers some link love. This will include writing a special “thank you” post on your blog and linking to your top droppers. We’re also going to think of one compliment to give each blog. We all work so hard on our blogs, blogging, promoting, dropping, that this will be a nice way to recognize each other’s efforts.

People have been linking to their top droppers for over a year. However, we’ve never made an official push to get EVERYONE to do it. So, you can help us make blogging history with the first ever official “Top Dropper Day.” We’re very serious about this. We are going to make this an embedded part of Entrecard culture, because it’s such a great way to help everyone and recognize the efforts of others. So, right here in the comments section, tell us if you’ll be participating. Not only will stating your participation motivate others to drop on your site every day to try to get that link at the end of the month, it will also re-inforce your being a part of the wonderful and supportive Entrecard community. Finally, we’re going to be taking some of Entrecard’s top droppers in the entire system, and giving them special linkbacks and blog mentions on our Top Dropper Day post! We’re going to be making a big push for Top Dropper Day to all Entrecard members. So, if you want to improve your chances of getting lots of links at the end of the month from lots of Entrecard members, start dropping! And don’t forget, the best way to drop is using the Entrecard Toolbar for Firefox.

Great plan … well, except for the fact that this month I’m back to school and have craptastic internet again so I’m unlikely to manage to BE a top dropper anywhere

This is nice idea, but I need to think a lot before doing this on my blog. As my readers are expecting more articles about Technology and may not receive posts where I simply link someone!
But new things are always good, and experimenting is not at all bad.

I have focused content blogs that do not exist for the sake of blogging. I think that doing this would look very out of place. I’d rather not. Of course all the dropping is good for me, and I am trying to do a fair amount of that for others, but I have a hard time being willing to imply that the linking is a major theme of my content.
Still fairly new, so if I’m out of line just give me time to let it all sink in, please.

Yes, we start dropping now, and on January 31 we will all look at our top droppers on the stats page and post a “thank-you” post on our blogs.

I too have a focused blog but I never forget who helps me make it a good blog: my readers. Putting a link on my blogs once a month seems a small thing to ask and do. Except for this last Jan 1st, I have tried to put my top droppers on my blogs each month. To do less would make me a blog snob, which I refuse to be. I allow (almost – unless they are too racy) every EC too, not just those who are in my niche. Why not?

Sorry to be a party pooper but it can’t work in it’s current state for the following reasons:
1. The top droppers list is for the past 30 days, but my top doppers have dropped 31 times in those 30 days according to the stats, that doesn’t add up.
2. I currently have 8 droppers that have all dropped 31 times, the top one is just the one who dropped most recently, so which blog would I blog about? ALL 8?
3. The top Droppers list always updates, I could blog now about my top dropper but then when the blogger who is currently top dropper #9 drops on me today, they will shoot to #1 position, and then again with the blogger at position #10.
4. Ignoring the fact you could have 10 top droppers, to be accurate you should not do this until midnight (EC time) to ensure it includes everyone’s drop on the last day of the month.
Top Dropper day should be done on the 1st of the month. If EC are going to promote it they should provide a ‘last months top droppers’ list that can be used.

I did this for the first time this month…of the 10, only 2 of them thanked me. I didn’t just link their site and thank them…I included a snip of what their blog was all about and invited my readers to visit their blogs. Many of my readers are not ECers.
Drop and run, drop and run…this is what is going to make me quit EntreCard altogether someday…

I’m all for promoting blogs. But I am one of those who not only drops, but reads your blog. I can honestly say from over half of my droppers, I don’t get the same. The only thing you will get from this is a rush of traffic, then nothing. 9 times out of 10, it’s not going to get you repeat visitors or comments, unless its a reminder to drop back on them.
I jumped right on the Twitter wagon, and that gained me some return visitors, more than I thought it would actually. I am still weighing in on that one.
As for this, sorry but I’m out. I will keep to my own pattern of reading, dropping, and commenting where I can. Seems to work well enough, and isn’t drawing me any Google red flags.

And this is going to help bloggers, how? Up the bounce rate, bring in traffic, no actual reading of the blogs, except for a select few, which equals 0-5 comments. Why should I reward someone for being in a contest in which they have the potential to win something just for dropping on my blog?
People request to advertise and don’t drop. This makes no sense and frankly, Graham, you’re running EC farther and farther into the ground.

There is only one drawback I can see in this. We are limited to 300 drops per day. If we concentrate our drops on those blogs whose top dropper lists we wish to appear, we will never see any new blogs. We’ll just keep dropping on the same blogs day after day after day. We will never get to experience any new blogs and blogs new to EC will never get any traffic.

As a reaction to Len in the comment above: when you drop from your inbox and not from a list you’ve made, you’ll get different links.

Sorry, I don’t like this idea at all. I prefer actual readers, not just droppers. Now more than ever with this contest, many will just be dropping away without reading anything. I give special link love to legitimate commenters because to me, they are the ones who really support my blog and are my most deserving visitors. Although some top droppers may actually read my blog too, if they comment, they get some link love back to theirs. So no, I won’t be participating in this Top Dropper Day.

I always do a top dropper post every month on 3 of my 4 blogs, I think it is good to reward the people who faithfully visit your site to drop. Here is the question: when everyone has 30 drops, and you have more than 10 top droppers, how do you recognize the ones who tied but didn’t make the top 10?
